REVIEW FOR FIRST LECTURE EXAM, BIOLOGY 03048, ANATOMY, FALL 1999

W. Crone (303 FTZ, 629-7439, cronewil@hvcc.edu, http://www.hvcc.edu/academ/faculty/crone/index.html)

OFFICE HOURS: T 12-1 in Bio Study Center, AMZ 219, T 1-2 in my office, Th 12-1 in my office, F 11-12 in Bio Study Center, AMZ 219, F 12-1 in my office, or by appointment

1. First lecture exam is THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 (Week 3), and covers lecture up through that Tuesday.

2. The exam will consist of multiple choice questions, fill-ins, and mini essays. You will have the one hour lecture time slot (1-2 PM) to complete the exam. I will hand it back and briefly review it the following Tuesday (you will hand it back before you leave that day, but are welcome to review it further during office hours).

While I haven't written the test and so can't be precise, I am anticipating the following question distribution:

10 multiple choice questions @ 2 points each

20 points

3 mini essays @ 15 points each

45 points

2 short answer @ 5 points each

10 points

Total

75 points

TOPICS to be covered: see course outline"Test 1." I do not anticipate getting to #2, sternal puncture, #4, myocardial infarction, #5 atherosclerosis (I'm not going to get to thorax by week 3, so we'll save those for the next test). Be prepared to answer these questions at the level presented in the texts. The PA National Boards are very clinically oriented, and so in keeping with that, there will be an emphasis on applied anatomy. I will focus on that material which was at least touched upon in lecture, but I will assume you have gained additional insights supporting lecture material from your review of the texts (Moore and Dalley blue boxes, anyone?) [and even the Grant's Dissector"tidbits"]. In terms of histology, be prepared to make and/or label line diagrams of general tissue types and skin. The essay questions will be at the level of end of chapter in Moore and Dalley or Van Wysberghe and Cooley scenarios.

Sample multiple-choice questions from previous year's test, with correct answers listed at the end:

  1. A dermatome is:
  2. A. an area of skin occurring only on the thoracoabdominal wall.

    B. an area of skin supplied by one dorsal primary ramus of a spinal nerve.

    C. the area of skin supplied by neurons located in a single dorsal root ganglion of a spinal nerve.

    D. the area of skin supplied by a single cutaneous nerve off a spinal nerve.

    E. the area of skin supplied by a single ventral primary ramus of a spinal nerve.

  3. With your knowledge of the general body segment, e.g, C1 (first cervical) to L5 (fifth lumbar), which of the following statements is false?
  4. A. The striated muscle comprising the anterior body wall is hypaxial.

    B. Structures derived from splanchnic (visceral) mesoderm are innervated by the autonomic nervous system.

    C. Almost every body segment contains sympathetic nerve ganglia from which postganglionic axons can be sent.

    D. The spinal cord at the level of every body segment contains preganglionic sympathetic neuron cell bodies in the interomediolateral cell column (lateral horn).

    E. Mixed spinal nerves contain both ventral and dorsal rami

  5. Inflammation of the facial nerve (Bell's palsy) near the stylomastoid foramen resulting in paralysis of this nerve would most likely result, on the affected side, in each of the following except:

A. paralysis of the buccinator muscle

B. inability to whistle

C. drooping of the eyebrow

D. inability to close the lips

E. paralysis of the muscles that move the jaw

answers: 1-C, 2-D, 3-E
