THE LAST HOMEWORK OF THE SEMESTER--YOUR BEST TWO WILL COUNT TOWARDS YOUR LECTURE GRADE

Please answer these questions with typed, well-constructed sentences and/or paragraphs, or clear diagrams and/or illustrations. Please cite the source(s) for your answer if you are directly quoting or using ideas or language substantially from a source, e.g., (Hickman et al., p. _____), (Week 9 handout). I will grade this assignment out of 20 points. Answers will be graded for accuracy, completeness, and grammar. Possible answers will be put on reserve at the library, Bio Study Center, and on my web site after the homeworks have been collected. Content from this assignment will be used for the third lecture exam. I will be glad to go over rough drafts with you during office hours or appointments. For many of you, we need to work on your written expression.

  1. Does any current class of molluscs match up with the"model mollusc" described in lecture? Why or why not? Please use structural examples to support your argument.
  2. What is metamerism? What are some of the advantages of metamerism for an animal? Choosing any annelid, briefly indicate the influence metamerism has on that creature's shape and lifestyle.
  3. The exoskeleton of an arthropod covers it in an armor-like fashion. Despite this, how does an arthropod exoskeleton permits movement and growth?
