WORD BANK (terms that you are responsible for):

  1. arm
  • base
  • cell
  • cell wall
  • chloroplast
  • coarse adjustment knob
  • compound light microscope
  • condenser (substage)
  • cover slip
  • cytoplasm
  • diameter of field
  • diaphragm
  • dissecting microscope (stereoscopic)
  • fine adjustment knob
  • high power objective lens (40X or 45X)
  • low power objective lens (10X)

Using your lab manual, perform those parts of Exercise 1 listed below:

    1A:

Parts and operation of the compound light microscope

Determination of magnification and field diameter

Exercises with the letter"e" and other newsprint

    2A:

Stained cheek cell, noting plasma membrane, nucleus, and cytoplasm with organelles. Contrast this to the Elodea cell, with its cell wall and chloroplasts. Take a section of Elodea leaf and look at it on a slide under a cover slip. What are the chloroplasts doing? What does that represent? Where is the plasma membrane located in a plant cell?

    1B:

Dissecting scope exercise with fluke or tapeworm slide. How does the view of a fluke or tapeworm in a dissecting microscope compare to that in a light microscope?

    1C:

Not for today--we will use the HVCC scanning electron microscope to look at arthropods later in the semester

Your laboratory instructor may base homework and/or quizzes on questions raised in this handout or in the assigned reading.
