First Lecture Exam in Vertebrate Zoology, Biology 03051, Spring 2000

Dr. W. Crone (303 FTZ, 629-7439, cronewil@hvcc.edu, http://www.hvcc.edu/academ/faculty/crone/index.html)

Week 4: Tuesday, February 8, 1-2 PM

(if HVCC is closed because of weather at that time, the test will be Tuesday, 2/15 @ 1PM)

Bring sharpened #2 pencils (I will not supply them and you will get a zero on the multiple choice if you cannot fill out the Scantron forms in pencil)!!

This test will cover materials covered in the lecture and text for weeks 1-3. I would recommend that you are particularly comfortable with your lecture notes, lecture handouts, video review sheets, and additional topics covered by the first set of homework questions.

Week 1:

INTRODUCTION, EVOLUTION (levels of organization, homology, evolution, geological time)

Week 2:

CHORDATES (taxonomy, chordate features, sea squirts, lancelets)

Week 3:

JAWLESS FISH (typical vertebral body segment, major features of jawless fish)

35 multiple choice questions, 2 points each, for a total of 70 points

2 essays taken from below, 15 points each, for a total of 30 points

100 points total for this first lecture exam.

Below are three possible essay topics. I will choose two for the exam, with issues in the other one to be covered by multiple choice questions. You are expected to prepare your thoughts about these essays (the reason I'm giving them to you ahead of time), but you will not be allowed to take notes or prewritten portions of essays into the test.

  1. Why is evolution by natural selection considered to be a scientific theory? Please include the definition of a scientific theory in your answer.
  2. Lancelets clearly show the"four favorite phylum features" of the chordates, but are probably not directly ancestral to the vertebrates. What types of features do vertebrates have that lancelets lack? Feel free to list, diagram, and/or write out.
  3. You go trout fishing in Lake Superior, but your first catch of the day has a large, approximately circular wound in its side. With your knowledge of vertebrate zoology, what does this wound represent and what animal is likely to have caused it?

Here are some sample multiple choice questions from a previous year's test. The correct answers are at the bottom of the page.

1. Which of the following is not a vertebrate class of fishes?

  1. Myxini
  2. Cephalaspidomorphi
  3. Chondrichthyes
  4. Aves
  5. Osteichthyes

2. Which of the following major chordate features would most likely be seen in an adult human being?

  1. dorsal, hollow nerve cord
  2. pharyngeal pouches/gill slits
  3. notochord
  4. postanal tail

3. Which of the following organ systems: functions is mismatched?

  1. digestive system: production of bile
  2. nervous system: interpretation of sensations
  3. endocrine system: production of liquid wastes
  4. musculoskeletal system: protection of internal organs
  5. reproductive system: production of sex hormones

4. Which one of the following events; geological time frames: dates is mismatched?

  1. first fossil appearance of jawed fishes; Silurian period of Paleozoic Era: 420 million years ago
  2. first fossil appearance of reptiles; Cretaceous period of Mesozoic Era: 100 million years ago
  3. first fossil appearance of jawless fishes; Cambrian period of Paleozoic Era: 520 million years ago
  4. first fossil appearance of birds; Jurassic period of Mesozoic Era: 150 million years ago
  5. first (and to date, only) appearance of the New York Jets in the Super Bowl; Recent epoch of Quaternary period of Cenozoic Era: 31 years ago

answers: 1-D, 2-A, 3-C, 4-B
