REVIEW SHEET FOR FIRST EXAM IN BIOLOGY 03074, ECONOMIC BOTANY

1. First exam is MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16 (week 12), and covers LECTURES 1-6.

2. The exam will consist of both multiple choice questions and mini essays. Please bring a #2 pencil for the Scantron form (three points off if you don't bring one!).

 

20 multiple choice questions, @ 2 points each --> 40 points

4 mini essays, @ 15 points each --> 60 points

TOTAL --> 100 points

 

Four miniessay topics will be taken from the list below. The other four topics will be covered by multiple choice questions. You are certainly welcome (expected) to prepare these topics ahead of time, but no notes or prewritten essays will be allowed in for the test. These questions can all be answered in 1-2 paragraphs. You will find that much of the material is lecture-based, but your answers will be strengthened by your perusal of the text (or other resources). Please answer all parts of the question(s) asked, but you don't have to be exhaustive for full credit.

1. What are the three vegetative organs of plants? Describe their major aspects, giving at least two examples each from economically useful plants.

2. What is a food chain? Why, generally speaking, can more vegetarians than meat eaters be supported from the same amount of farmed acerage?

3. Describe the major floral and fruit characteristics of the grasses (Family Poaceae). What are major differences between corn (Zea mays) and wheat (Triticum aestivum) inflorescences?

4. What is meant by the"Green Revolution?" How has it modified cereal grain agriculture in developing countries? What are some of the shortcomings of the Green Revolution?

5. Describe why legumes are a major part of human diets.

6. What was the biological basis for the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s, from human, potato, and potato blight viewpoints?

7. What is cotton? What made cotton the number one crop in the antebellum South?

8. How did trading in spices encourage the (European) Age of Exploration?

 

In addition to the specific essay topics, you should be ready for multiple choice questions from other major issues covered in class, such as plant families, tissues, or other major issues:

 

1. What plant family is characterized by the following floral features? Four sepals, four petals (forming a cross pattern), six stamens (four long ones, two short ones), and two carpels fused and superior?

A. Brassicaceae (Cruciferae), the mustard family

B. Rosaceae, the rose family

C. Liliaceae, the lily family

D. Fabaceae (Leguminosae), the bean family

E. Solanaceae, the nightshade family

 

2. Those cells with unevenly thickened primary walls that make up the"stringiness" of celery petioles are:

A. parenchyma

B. collenchyma

C. sieve tube members

D. tracheids

 

3. Which of the following cereal grains contains large amounts of gluten, allowing its flour to become elastic with kneading, and rise with the addition of yeast?

A. rice, Oryza sativa

B. corn, Zea mays

C. barley, Hordeum vulgare
