Verticillium dahliae the causal agent of cotton wilt in northern Iran.

- Abstract: Based on morphological and physiological
characteristic and host range
studies, defoliant and non-defoliant strains of Verticillium dahliae, were
identified in the Gorgan area, north of Iran. The mean diameter of
microsclerotia of defoliant and non-defoliant strains were 22 times 35 and
32 times 55 micrometers, respectively. In vitro, optimum temperature for
mycelial growth was 27 degree C for defoliant strain and 23 degree C for
non-defoliant strain. On cotton cultivars Cooker 100W, Acala SJ4-42, Acala
SJ5 and on snapdragon and safflower cv. Gila, defoliant strain caused more
severe symptoms than non-defoliant strain. On tomato cv. Pearson,
non-defoliant strain caused wilting, while defoliant strain did not
produce any symptom. The results indicated that defoliant and non
defoliant strains are similar to T-1 and SS4 strains, respectively,
reported from USA and elsewhere.
